Hallmark & certification
What's stamped on your jewellery, what it means, and how to verify it.
Indian jewellery sold by reputable jewellers carries two certifications: a BIS Hallmark on the metal, and a diamond grading certificate from a recognised lab (we use IGI and GIA) for all stones above a third of a carat.
The BIS Hallmark on your gold
Since 2021, the Bureau of Indian Standards has required all gold jewellery sold in India to be hallmarked. The hallmark you'll find on your piece — usually on the inside of a band, the back of a pendant, or the clasp of a chain — has four marks:
- The BIS standard mark — a triangular logo. This is the official seal of certification.
- The purity mark — "916" for 22K (91.6% pure gold), "750" for 18K (75% pure), "999" for 24K (99.9% pure).
- The HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) — a six-digit alphanumeric code unique to that specific piece.
- The jeweller's identification mark — confirms which BIS-licensed jeweller hallmarked it.
If any one of these is missing, the piece is not legally hallmarked. We don't sell anything without all four.
Verifying your HUID online
Every HUID we issue can be verified on the BIS Care app (Android & iOS, free) or at manakonline.in. Enter the HUID and you'll see the piece's metal, purity, registration date, and the jeweller's BIS licence number.
If anything doesn't match, contact us immediately. We've never had a mismatch in 20+ years of business, but the verification system exists for a reason — use it.
Diamond grading (IGI / GIA)
Every diamond above 0.30 carat we sell comes with a certificate from either the International Gemological Institute (IGI) or the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Each certificate documents the four C's:
- Carat — the weight, to the second decimal.
- Cut — proportions and finish; affects how the stone returns light.
- Colour — graded D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). Most engagement stones we stock are F – H grade.
- Clarity — graded FL (flawless) to I3 (heavily included). Most of our solitaires sit in the VS1 – VS2 range.
The certificate also includes the diamond's unique laser-inscribed identification, which can be matched to the stone with a 10× loupe. Treat the certificate like the title deed for your stone — keep it with the piece, and pass it along when the jewellery itself is passed along.
What we don't sell
- Non-hallmarked gold of any kind.
- Diamonds without certification (above 0.30 ct).
- Imitation, lab-substituted, or treated stones presented as natural.
These standards apply equally to our online store and the Suntikoppa showroom. Every order ships with its hallmark certificate and, where applicable, the diamond grading report.
